Spring of Victory: Interlude #17
For Love and Country "There you are." Xanalis saunters up to his cousin. "Shiver is looking for you." "Good for Shiver. So are you his errand boy now? I thought that was Daryth's job with the way he constantly follows me." Nina's response is hardly welcoming. She pulls back her bow string and lines up a shot. The arrow misses its mark and flies wildly to one side. "Daryth isn't his errand boy and neither am I, Princess Short Stuff. We're all concerned about your safety after what happened at the Coronation." Xanalis crosses his arms over his chest. "Are you coming or not?" "Whatever." "Like it or not, your brother is the King. You have responsibilities now. One of those responsibilities is to come when the King calls." "I'm well aware of my responsibilities." Nina draws another arrow from her quiver and readies for a shot. Xanalis's patience is wearing thin. "You and I need to go talk to Shiver. Now." He reaches out to take her bow. Again, her shot misses its mark and flies off to one side. "Fine. I'll go. But I don't have to like it." She undoes the bowstring and turns on her heel toward the private quarters. Xanalis follows more like a guard than a cousin. Eventually, the two find Shiver. He's discussing some building plans with one of the nobles. "I can't believe she actually came to talk to me." Shiver stands and grins at the pair entering. Looking at the doorway, he calls out, "Daryth, I know you're there. Either come in or go out. There are no assassins here." A small shift in a shadow and nothing more indicates Daryth's departure. Nina curtsies "You summoned me, your Majesty?" She remains low in the curtsey until Shiver sighs and motions for her to rise "Nina, what am I going to do with you?" Shiver sits down and motions for Xanalis and Nina to also sit. "Let me do my job as Princess and not take a Consort," she retorts as she sits down. "My job doesn't include removing myself from Court by supporting this inane decision for you to have a Consort. I'm still furious at Xanalis for even suggesting it. You don't need a woman. You already have me." "I know you and Shiver are close, Nina, but it's not the same and you know it. The last time I checked, you and Shiver don't share a bedroom. " All three visibly shudder at the thought. "Besides, Shiver needs an heir." Turning to her brother, Nina says, "You can't be serious. You aren't going to share a bed with this woman, are you? Are you?!" Her eyes open wide and her jaw drops in surprise. "I haven't decided yet, but no, I probably won't for awhile. I would like her to feel welcome here first." Shiver gives that knowing look to his younger sister. "And you're going to help her feel welcome. Aren't you?" His stare hardens. "Aren't you?" After a moment of tense silence, Nina gives in. "Fine. Whatever. But if she's not an elf, all bets are off. There's NO WAY I'm going to have anything to do with a Consort who isn't an elf. It's bad enough that you've even considered this, but if she's not elven... " Nina shakes her head. Shiver stands. "It's settled then. Nina, I want you to prepare for the arrival of High Priestess Lorindorial. I sent out the message this morning, so it may be a bit before she gets here, but I want everything to be perfect when she arrives." "Lorindorial? THE Lorindorial?" Nina's astonishment and delight isn't hidden from her family. Shiver and Xanalis just smirk. Perhaps this new addition to the Court will help them all. "DARYTH!" Nina goes running out of the room without even waiting to be dismissed. "DARYTH! Where in the nine hells did he go this time?" "Yes, Princess?" whispers a voice next to her in the hall. "We have a lot to talk about." The two walk down the hall discussing security matters for the new arrival. Once Nina is out of ear shot, Shiver chuckles to his cousin. "Well that went rather well, I'd say."
