Winter of Victory: Interlude #31

The Trouble with Freedom
By John Pieper

Gorna - Winter CY595

The final battle between the Giants and the Gyri had raged for hours. A rumor said that one of the mighty Sakhut had fallen, and the rest were fighting for their lives against the swarms of Gyric adventurers that opposed them. The unbroken Giant line still held against the best wolfpacks the Sheldomar had to offer, but both sides had taken losses. The Gyri and their allies fed fresh units into the maelstrom of combat, while troops shattered by the intensity of combat fled to safety. The Olwythi and Longbowmen of Gyruff fired sheets of arrows, breaking the ability of the Giant lines to stand firm against charges from the Knights of the Watch. The attacking Keoish army could be picked out by the numerous Lion standards flapping over them. Several Battles from the Gran March army chopped into the Giant line. But against all this, the Giants could hold.

Two things happened that changed the situation on the field. First, Grand Duke Owen suddenly appeared with a fresh army of Fey that overstretched the Giants' ability to cope. Second, a presence was felt over the entire land. A voice spoke to the goblinoid allies of the Giants. "My children, I am free! And you are free from the yoke of the giants! Your souls are your own now!" With a crack that echoed over the battlefield, the goblinoids on the field realized what had happened.

"Oh, great! Now we can die free!" One hobgoblin commander yelled over the din to another. "It's miles to the forest, and we'll have to go through the humans to get there! I don't see any way out!"

"Head for the city! The humans haven't broken into the city yet! Get in the sewers, and find some of our mages! I have a plan!" The other commander stared for a moment, then turned to parry a blow from a bizarre looking humanoid with goat legs. He cut the creature down with a fierce slice and yelled, "But the sewers are destroyed!"

"We said the sewers were destroyed, but the giants never checked our work that carefully!"

With that, the other hobgoblin laughed heartily, and began snapping orders to the remainder of his unit. The hobgoblin yelled, "Head for the city, you stinking gobbos! Sneak in as best you can! Hurry!" The order was distributed, and before long, the goblin forces were abandoning their positions and actually attacking some of the nearby giants, wreaking havoc on the Giant line. Only a few hours later, the Gyri and their allies declared victory over the Sakhut. By then, the only remaining goblins on the field were dead. The rest had disappeared.
